Herb served in the Navy during the Korean War on the USS Yellowstone (a destroyer tender). While there, he piloted the ship’s landing craft.

After his time in the Navy, he married Margaret Brune. Together they had five children (Kathy, Karen, Mark, Kim, and Michael). Herb was extremely committed to his family and church. He spent most of his free time volunteering, coaching youth sports, and camping (in his motorhome).

Herb was commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel for his outstanding service to his community.
