TIMOTHY J. KOENIG

Chief Koenig started with the Erlanger Fire Department in December of 1972 as a volunteer. When he wasn’t making fire runs, he was working at the family business, Koenig’s Market on Dixie Highway. In 1988, he was hired as the department’s full time Fire Inspector. He held many titles during his career with Erlanger including Lieutenant, Captain, Fire Marshal and Assistant Chief. In 2004, he was named the second full time Fire Chief in the history of the department. During his time as chief, he implemented the integration of paramedics into our department for better medical service and secured the rating of ISO Two. This Insurance Services Office (ISO) rating lowered rates for our citizens and businesses and had only been achieved by 1% of departments in the United States at the time. In 2006, under Chief Koenig’s leadership, Erlanger received an Award for Municipal Excellence at the National League of Cities’ Congress of Cities in Reno, Nevada. Chief Koenig was awarded the Syrian Shriner’s Firefighters Leadership award in 2008. In 2009, Chief Koenig retired from Erlanger Fire/EMS. He continued working in the fire service as the Assistant Chief of Bellevue McVille. In 2014, Chief Koenig was named a Lifetime Member of the department. Only three other members have achieved that honor.

Sadly, we lost Chief Koenig to cancer in October of 2018. He is survived by his wife, Darcy (former Fire Department Auxiliary member), their two children; daughter Tyler (former Erlanger volunteer and part time Firefighter/EMT), son TJ, (former Erlanger Fire Explorer) and two grandchildren.
