Paul E. Tipton enlisted in the United States Army on August 15, 1946. After basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, he was assigned to a rifle squad in Italy where he ultimately was promoted to Sergeant and served as the assistant squad leader.

He was honorably discharged on November 3, 1947. SGT Tipton was awarded the World War II Victory Medal and the Army Occupation Medal.
