Sgt Robert J. McKenzie entered military service on February 9, 1949. He attended basic training at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas and was trained as an Airplane and Engine Mechanic and B-36 Mechanic Specialist at Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls, Texas. He was assigned to the 28th Maintenance Squadron, 28th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing at Rapid City Air Force base. His primary mission was to support the base’s B-36 bombers, but he also worked on a variety of aircraft in transient maintenance.
