Matthew enlisted in the Navy in 1995 shortly before graduating from St. Henry High School. He completed recruit training in Great Lakes, Illinois that same year prior to his assignment as a Damage Controlman on the USS Carl Vinson where he served multiple tours in the Persian Gulf and Western Pacific prior to leaving active duty. Matt continued to drill with the reserves and volunteered for re-activation prior to being honorably discharged.
