Staff Sergeant Donald Forest Doan (9/9/1917 – 6/3/1990) served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. Staff Sgt. Doan is one of the highest decorated military personnel to reside in Erlanger, having received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal for his heroism while participating in aerial flight in the Pacific theater. Staff Sgt. Doan flew a number of missions over the Burma Hump, also known as the “aluminum trail” because pilots “could plot their course to China by the line of smoking wrecks upon the hillsides.” He has been featured in “The Kentucky Story” by Joseph O. VanHook and “American Heroes of the War in the Air” by Howard Mingos.
