Richard Berling served in World War II and in the Korean War, from 1947 to 1951. He was on the USS Gurke (DD-783). He was on the Destroyer that went to the Battle of Inchon at the 38th parallel.  His ship was hit five times by enemy fire. He received several medals for his service:  the Asiatic-Pacific campaign medal, China Service Medal, Japan Navy Occupation Medal, Korean Service Medal, a Marksman designation and a Navy Unit Commendation. He also had 3 other brothers serving in the military during that time:  Ralph Berling, Thomas Berling and James Arthur Berling.
