Five Ways the City Protects Your Tax Dollars

When most people think about City services, they think about police, fire, parks, and public works. Behind the scenes, the Finance Department works to help ensure taxpayer dollars are managed responsibly.

While much of this work is not visible to the public, there are many processes in place to promote accountability, accuracy, and transparency.

Here are five ways the City works to protect public funds:

  1. Annual Independent Audit
Every year, the City undergoes an independent financial audit. An outside accounting firm reviews our financial statements, tests transactions, and evaluates internal controls to provide an objective review of the City’s financial reporting.
  2. Internal Controls
The Finance Department has procedures in place to help safeguard public funds. Financial responsibilities are divided among multiple employees, approvals are required throughout the process, and transactions are reviewed to help reduce the risk of errors.
  3. Budget Monitoring
The City’s budget is approved by City Council each year through a public process. Throughout the year, the Finance Department monitors revenues and expenditures to help ensure spending stays within the adopted budget and to identify any trends that may need attention.
  4. Purchasing Procedures
The City follows purchasing policies that help ensure public funds are spent responsibly. Depending on the purchase, we may require quotes or competitive bids to ensure fairness and get the best value.
  5. Transparency
Financial information, including the annual budget, audit reports, and many Council meeting materials, is available to the public. Providing this information helps keep residents informed about how public funds are managed. Managing taxpayer dollars is a year-round responsibility. These processes reflect the City’s ongoing commitment to accountability, transparency, and responsible financial stewardship.
